"Pretending to Fly," acrylic on collage, 38" x 50"

“Pretending to Fly” collages images that imply the medicalization of infancy, advertisements for formula, antiseptic, and vitamins, as well as telling the story of
an emergency room visit in rural Georgia where they don’t see a lot of families like ours:

Doctor in emergency room in rural Georgia: “What happened?”
Me: “He was pretending to fly with his other mother.”
Dr: “You’re not his mother?”
Me: “We’re both his mother, we’re lesbians, from Vermont.” (Because it’s the state that explains it.)
Dr: “Oh, well, that’s OK.”
(Thank you.)
