Baby Talk

This series of paintings depicts images of the human brain taken with recent MRI technology. These scans, as well as diagrams and graphs of the brain, illuminate what happens in the brain as a baby develops motor skills, acquires language, and bonds with his or her caretakers. The paintings combine these contemporary images of technology and scientific research with the phonetic language of infants, examples of their cognitive development, and the “play” that is their medium for learning and making connections. Painted from the distorted perspectives of the mother, the paintings fuse science with the intimate and visceral experience of observing and witnessing human development.

Narratives emerge from my desire to engage the viewer/reader in an imaginative process that incorporates a span of discourses embedded in images.
